FINAL GIRL

The Final Girl series is inspired by Cindy Sherman’s created characters and cult classic horror movies, such as Carrie (1976). By combing flash photography, dynamic body angles, a blood-soaked model, and an off gaze the paintings are reminiscent of black and white film stills. By posing the model in uncompromising positions, whilst shooting from a high angle, a feeling of vulnerability is created with the viewer in a higher power position.

Despite this, these paintings seem to represent the ‘final girl’ trope of classic horror/thriller films. The woman in the image is blood soaked, as though struggle has ensued, however she remains strong with a neutral facial expression, fearful whilst in control. To avid film viewers the images seem familiar, the images tell a story without the over sexualisation of the female lead.
