Artist Statement

Inspired and influenced by feminist photography and celebrity imagery my work focuses on themes of glamour, identity, nostalgia and girlhood.

Throughout my practice I have focused on the idea of texture. I use a glossy paint medium and precise strokes to give my paintings a smooth, glossy appearance with a high fashion feel.

My current work is inspired by childhood nostalgia and the aesthetic of the early 2000’s. As well as the visual aesthetics of the Y2K style and a sense of nostalgia for the technology, fashion, music and feeling of the time.

Esme #7 depicts a whimsical scene of childhood dolls, bows and pink makeup, with a bright pastel colour palette and era accurate props (a bejewelled pink flip phone and digital camera). With an off camera gaze this scene feels natural, almost like a dreamy memory.

Thematically this ongoing series explores identity and femininity with a focus on reimagining representations of women seen in 2000’s media and film.
